Chapter 236: The Woman in White
Chapter 236: The Woman in White
Theodora Blackthorn’s POV
All my life, I only had one goal - to become the Alpha of the Bloodmoon Vanguard Pack, and to prove every living male out there that women could be something too apart from just childbearing machines.
But that goal was for the woman who wanted to be heard. The real Theo, without the weight of the world on her shoulders, is someone who just wanted to be free and have lots of fun.
And right now, the weight of the world wasn’t on my shoulders. There was nothing to look forward to. I didn’t know where I was going, or where I’m coming from anymore. I felt like I was floating in thin air, carried anywhere by the gentle wind.
My existence meant nothing to me. Right now, I didn’t even know who I was. I could barely feel a thing.
All around me was a white Void that never ended. It’s been like this for a while now, and it was so very quiet. I kinda loved it. Peace. Empty. Nothing.
I floated for a while, before I felt my feet touch the ground. As I stood and looked around, everywhere was still plain white and bright. Looking down at myself, my skin was barely there. It was almost transparent, like I was about to vanish completely.
And I loved it that way.
I wanted to vanish.
"Rose,"
The voice came from behind, and I turned around slowly and faced it. Standing a few feet away was a woman in white clothes. She had wavy red hair and amber eyes, and I could have taken her for an angel that had come for me. Seeing her, I felt an aching relief in my chest.
So deep that a tear rolled down my face.
Wasn’t this a little exaggerated for an angel I’ve never met before?! And...is my name Rose?!
"Are you an angel?" I asked inquisitively.
"Heavens, no," She laughed a little, and I felt this bubbly feeling up my chest.
Weird, I thought I could hardly feel a thing.
"Then who are you?!"
She smiled and extended a hand to me, her eyes softly urging me to take it. I moved before I could give it any thought and she clasped her fingers into mine as though they’d always belonged there. Something about her touch was familiar and my heart ached even more.
"My sweet rose," She smiled at me.
I tried to stretch my mouth into a smile, but instead more tears just rolled down my cheeks. Why was my heart so heavy seeing her? Do I know her from somewhere?!
"Do you like this place?" She asked again, both of us walking forward. She led me, as if she knew exactly where we were going, and I blindly trusted her.
"I don’t know," I replied honestly and took another look around, "It’s Peaceful and silent,"
"It’s also empty," She added.
"You’re here,"
"I won’t be here for long, Rose,"
"Is that my name?" I inquired, "Rose?!"
"The name I gave you, yes,"
"Why?!"
"There was a time when you were a toddler. You held a rose and wouldn’t let go. It looked so good on you, and I started to call you Rose from then on,"
I nodded in understanding, "If you knew me when I was a toddler, what does that make you to me? You seem important to my heart, but I can’t really remember,"
"You don’t really have to remember me, Rose," The smile never left her eyes, "I just want you to remember who you are, and that is enough,"
"No," I stopped walking abruptly, my heart clenching, "I don’t remember anything, but I know exactly why I’m here. The peace. The silence. The emptiness. I chose it all. Because it’s easier. And because I don’t want to remember who I am, or whatever weight I have to carry. Here...there’s nothing to worry about. I could keep floating for whatever time I have left...," I looked down at her again, and I was a little more transparent than before.
The red-haired woman faced me, and silently ticked a hair strand behind my ear, "It was tough, wasn’t it?"
"I don’t know what you’re talking about," My lips trembled, and even I didn’t know why I was feeling this way because I couldn’t remember a thing.
She cupped my face next, her eyes twinkling with unshed tears, "That night was my mistake. I should have been more observant about you, and I’m sorry I left you so early. I shouldn’t have...,"
"I really have no idea what you’re talking about and I honestly don’t want to remember a thing so I would really appreciate it if we didn’t talk about such,"
She looked down at me again, and my heart ached even more badly. I wanted her to leave for making me feel this way, but I couldn’t let go of her hand. I felt like it would rip it apart if I let go. So I gripped it even tighter.
Her arms wrapped around my back and she pulled me into her arms. As I rested my head on her shoulders, the tears finally wrecked me completely. I bawled so hard it shook my core, and whatever of me was left.
"I’m so sorry, my little rose," She gently stroked my hair.
My cries came out even harder and uglier. I cried and cried with every sound eventually getting swallowed in this white Void. I hugged her back so hard I was afraid I might crush her, but she accepted every grip like she had missed it with all her heart.
A while later, after the tears had subsided, we were both sitting on the floor now staring into space. I had my head on her shoulders and my arms linked to hers. I felt okay and safe, and at peace.
"Archdemon," The woman said, "That’s what I am,"
I paused and looked up at her. She looked nothing like a demon to me, "I don’t care what you are. I’m not letting go,"
She laughed again, "I’m not saying you should. I just didn’t want you thinking I was an angel,"
"Well, you’re beautiful, you’re wearing white and we are in a white space and I believe I’m about to disappear so...yes, you’re an angel that’s here to take me away,"
She was still grinning from ear to ear, "If I had worn black clothes to come and see you, would you believe I was a demon,"
I thought about it for a second and shook my head.
"Well, I am," She said after giggling again, "I am an archdemon, and your demon knew about me,"
"My demon?" I arched a brow in surprise, "I have a demon?"
"Yes...," She nodded, looking slightly uncertain, "But she’s not here at the moment. She’s out there," She pointed at space again, "Causing havoc and throwing the world into ruin,"
Theo blinked, "How is someone like you an archdemon?!"
"Archdemons emerge when their wolves fall into complete despair. They kind of fuse with their wolves and unlock an otherworldly power,"
"Whoa, that’s crazy," I was in awe, "So what made you fall into despair?!"
A sad look fell over her eyes, and I looked up at her. Whatever made her feel that way made me feel ten times worse, and I wished there was a way to take away the pain from her and replace it with happy memories, "I was forced to marry someone I didn’t love," She replied, "Because he was powerful. I had to give up on a lot of things to be with him, and when I finally gave birth to my little bundle of joy...more trouble followed,"
She swallowed tightly.
"My baby had to wear a pendant all her life. A pendant that hid the secret I wanted to get rid of. Everything I tried was null, and I eventually, out of desperation, told a maniac about her thinking he would help me. I shouldn’t have. I should have known he had his own plans. At some point in it all, I just couldn’t take it anymore. And that was the trigger," She looked down at me and laughed sadly, wiping a tear, "Sounds stupid, right?"
I didn’t know much, but I know it didn’t sound stupid at all. Whatever she felt, and how deeply she had felt it, was valid.
She was a forced wife, and when she finally found something that brought light to her eyes, it came with problems and she trusted the wrong person.
"Were you able to...solve the problem?" I asked.
She shook her head, "No," She replied, "I died and I left her behind. I wish she would be happy and...stop trying to chase other people’s recognition and acceptance,"
"She should be like me, then," I answered with a smile, "She should come here, to this place and just...glide through it all. Nothing to expect, and no one’s acceptance. Absolutely none,"
"But it isn’t living," She replied, and pinched her nose hard but I didn’t feel anything, "I want her to live, and I want her to enjoy living. Not for anyone, but herself,"
"That’s beautiful," I replied, and I somehow began to envy that child this woman wanted so much for, "I hope she does that, too,"
"Do you?" Her eyes twinkled.
I nodded enthusiastically.
"Then get up, my child," She said strongly, her voice carrying a fierce tone, "Get up and fight out of this place, Rose. You don’t belong here. You belong out there, and you belong to those who are waiting for your return!"
